POSITION DESCRIPTION Ainsworth Pet Nutrition Frontenac Title: Quality Manager Reports To: Asst. Director of Quality Assurance and Food Safety Substitution: Asst. Director of Quality Assurance and Food Safety Overall Focus: Responsible for the Plant Facilities and Warehouse Quality Assurance program implementation and adherence. Key emphasis on receipt and storage of raw materials, plant milling and processing, packaging, warehousing of goods and materials and provide technical support to assure finished product is safe and meets specifications. Perform accurate and timely communication, documentation, inspections, auditing and surveillance of facilities and relevant business processes as defined in company SOP (Standard Operational Procedures), GMP (Good Manufacturing Procedures) and GSFI (Global Food Safety Initiative) Food Safety Program. The position also has the responsibility to assess the site and roll out the proper Ainsworth Pet Nutrition Quality Standards and Quality Management Processes on site. The expectation is that this position will also continuously improve site quality and hygiene performance and capability, run risk assessments and gap analysis versus global standards on a regular basis. FLSA Designation: Salary Exempt Level: 16 PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES and ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Provides direction and influence for the development and implementation of all quality systems. o Manages the internal quality audit function for the site and assures the effectiveness of the corrective and preventative action process within the framework of the site’s quality processes. o Directs the quality components of all product and formula at the site through quality planning, specifications development, and project oversight for compliance to GMP, FDA, and FSMA requirements and other company policies. o Ensures the documentation and implementation of SOP’s, GMP’s and HACCP o Consults with plant management on better operational, analytical, and documentation procedures, to improve overall efficiency and product yields by reduction of hold items and customer concerns. o Supports and implements internal AQS auditing program in conjunction with management direction. o Ensures through direct observation and documentation that plant production is maintaining and adhering to policies, programs and federal guidelines with respect to FDA CFR 21, FSMSA, and AAFCO o Ensures that site is prepared for all audits at the site o All Staff shall be informed of their responsibility to report food safety problems to personnel with authority to initiate action. Assures that all products and packs produced at the site are safe and conform to the intended product design o Assures adherence to the Ainsworth Pet Nutrition Quality and Food Safety Standards including but not limited to HACCP, SQF and FSMA o Implements the Hold & Release policy at the site to assure only acceptable finished products reaches customers. o Participates in the Management of Crises involving products, resolution of customer complaints, and continuous improvement of quality and food safety. o Notifies Plant Management and Corporate Quality of product quality and safety issues; identifying business risks and recommended corrective actions o Provides laboratory analytical support required to troubleshoot and resolve site issues, including label guarantees, formula adherence, and microbiological quality. o Recommends line operation shut down due to product quality and food safety issues in the process or site environment. o Consults on process problems and requested corrective action and/or changes to standard operating procedure per Ainsworth policy. o Use required procedures to determine if change can be made o Conduct root cause analysis, initiate corrections, corrective and preventive action, assign responsibility, and verify effectiveness. o Document decision making process and how exceptions were handled o Review and report Hold Product cause, effect, and resolution, establish corrective action, document actions, determine disposition of products put on hold. o Develop monthly reports by way of graphs to management. o Communicate quality and food safety incidents to all necessary parties including follow up action taken and results reflective by change if change is necessary. o Provide feedback to operators and manufacturing managers regarding non-conforming ingredients, products and packaging. Document all occurrences by Corrective Action and verify resolution. o Ensures that the Ainsworth Food Safety program is adhered to o Provides coaching and training for all plant employees in the Ainsworth Quality Systems and Programs o Provides training and feedback to operators on proper measurement, SQF, food safety and sanitation methods. o Educates and instruct plant personnel in required quality control testing, confirm these procedures are being maintained.  GMP’S,  HACCP  FSMA PC’s o Performs required audits of operators testing and inspection methods for ingredients, finished products and packaging to ensure adherence to SOP’s, specifications and testing methodology. o Documents recommendations, improvements and infractions to test methodology and report to appropriate management in a timely manner. Serves as a member of the Plant Management Team developing strategies for achievement of annual goals Manages the Quality Team to achieve team’s goals o Serves as SQF Practitioner for the site o Has direct accountability to lead the Quality Assurance Team Leaders and QA Technicians to assure development of skills, completion of work, and the on-going maintenance of quality systems. Provides assistance in developing the staff in each of their areas. • Ensures that all safety requirements and regulations are being adhered to providing feedback to employees on unsafe practices. Institute corrective action as necessary. o Leads the performance appraisal and development process for assigned employees  Develops annual goals  Conducts performance evaluations  Develops people to understand and implement all their responsibilities o Leads team to achieve all established goals and targets  Creates a positive work environment and quality culture  Make sure that people have tools and resources necessary to perform their work  Provides for successful onboarding and continued skill development of the team  Makes recommendations for staffing requirements and changes in alignment of resources.  Develops and manages quality budget, including labor and supplies.  Q&FS training requirements for the team and their individual development Works with Food Safety Manager to assure sanitary conditions, employee hygiene, environmental monitoring, and implementation of SSOP’s. Assumes responsibility for own personal development and continuous learning of new technology, methods and regulations. Practices customer intimacy with internal and external customers in day to day responsibilities Lives by the Ainsworth values QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge and skills necessary to meet organizational objectives) Education/Training: Bachelor’s Degree in Food Science, Biology or related field Certifications/Licenses: HACCP, SQF Practitioner or GFSI experience Experience: A minimum of 7 years’ experience in food manufacturing QA, process improvement, laboratory management quality systems, or food process engineering. Ability to occasionally travel by plane, car or other ground transportation, as needed.
